Seals can be found all over the UK. The Grey Seal spends two thirds of its life at sea. The remainder is spent basking in the sun on the beach. At Horsey Beach the seals can be seen basking on the beach and playing in the sea. Hundreds of seals that appear as rocks from a distance enjoy this daily.
The seals breed in wintertime and pups can be found on the beach or in the sand dunes in the area between October and February. The females give birth a day after coming to shore. They will suckle their pups for 18-21 days. The pups coat is fluffy and is not waterproof. They also lack the fat blubber to keep them warm at sea. After the suckling period the pups are left to their own devices. After they have shed their fur they will venture into the sea and learn to eat and survive. Only 40% of all pups born will survive their first year.
Amongst the grey seals at Horsey you will also find common seals or harbour seals. These are smaller than the grey seals and have their pups in the summer months. You will see them making a banana shape with their fins.
If you visit Horsey Beach please be mindful of the seals both on the beach and in the dunes. They are wild animals and as such should be left alone. You are in their natural habitat so take some time to appreciate that and not to get to close to them. They can be easily frightened and can also bite.
